An Advent message from Pres. Harrison

Advent is a time for repentance but also for gift giving, as we remember the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who came to earth some 2,000 years ago for us and for our salvation.

“The Wise Men recognized the gift of Christ, and they came and gave Him their gifts,” says the Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. “We recognize the gift of Christ to all of us. Our sins are forgiven. … He came, this Babe in Bethlehem, to die on a cross for the sins of the world. Commemorating that fact, we rejoice, and we give gifts to one another.”

We Believe

  • We believe that there is only one true God, who reveals himself in the Bible as being three persons in one God– the Father, who created and sustains the world; the Son, who became and lived as a man, died, rose from the dead and returned to heaven, taking up again His full glory and power; and the Holy Spirit, who brings people to faith in Jesus Christ and imparts to them the blessings of faith. Each is fully God, and yet there is only one God, not three.
  • We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, spoken through human authors. It is trustworthy and without error. Its main message is the gift of eternal life found in Jesus, the only Son of God.
  • We believe that all people are born in sin (original sin) and that we sin against God everyday and are in need of His forgiveness.
  • We believe that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior and that He is true God and true man and that He died on the cross to atone for the sins of all mankind. But the Good News is that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and opened the gates of heaven to all who believe in Him.
  • We believe that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ even though there is no merit or worthiness in us.

Bethany Lutheran Church is also a fellowship of Lutheran Christians. We are affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, a Biblically conservative church body. The LC-MS is called a “confessional” church body because we publicly confess our faith. We believe that the three ecumenical creeds are faithful declarations of the Christian faith. These include the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed.

Our congregation is called “Lutheran” because we follow the Bible based teachings of Martin Luther, which were the driving force for the Reformation of the Church in the 16th century. God used Luther to proclaim again the Biblical truth that in Jesus Christ, God is loving and merciful. Forgiveness and eternal life are gifts that God wants to give people through faith in Jesus. During the time of the Reformation, much of the church was reformed and revitalized and brought back to its Biblical roots. The teachings of the Lutherans were gathered together in the Book of Concord of 1580, and are used as a confession of faith by our church body.

K-8th Grade Christmas Program at VPAT! INFO! Monday, December 11

Remember to mark your calendar for the night of December 11 for Bethany’s Christmas Program. This is a school-wide (grade K-8) production so every student will be involved. The location of the performance is at Vacaville Performing Arts Theater across the street from Bethany school.

This event will begin at 6:00 P.M. and will feature our students performing musical selections and performing “The Unbelievable Super Fantastic Truly Amazing Christmas Extravaganza.”

All students (grades K-8) are expected to participate in the Christmas program. Students have been instructed that PERFORMANCE takes PRECEDENCE over a rehearsal, meeting, practice, etc. A performance does NOT take precedence over a wedding, a pre-booked vacation, or a once-in-a-lifetime event. All absences need to be documented AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please inform your student’s teacher. Emergencies will be treated as such.

Students must be at VPAT by 5:30pm. You will drop your child off at the right side of the VPAT building at the performers’ entrance (WE WILL HAVE SIGNAGE.) Then you will park and make your way into the lobby and await the opening of the doors. For the Christmas musical, students are allowed to wear nice holiday attire (school appropriate) or chapel uniform UNLESS they have specific costumes in the musical. They are allowed to wear Santa hats if they would like. Reserved seating for families of 3rd graders up in the front rows for their winning the pie selling contest will be marked.

“Resisting Temptation”

Some time ago, a pastor told the congregation he was going to preach on the book of Romans. Privately, several congregates complained that he had already taught several times on that subject. Unfazed, the pastor kindly and humbly said, “You are right. I’ve spoken several times on the book of Romans. By the way, what do you remember?………..Silence. Truthfully, we have very short memories and important points need to be re-emphasized throughout our lifetime. “Resisting Temptation” is one such topic. Take this article and place it in your Bible as a quick reference and reminder. The following is modified from Core Christianity. 7 Ways to Resist Temptation By Leah B.
May 22, 2017.

***********************

Each one of us have certain sins that are particularly troubling to us. Therefore one of the ways to battle sin is to know how to resist temptation. Here are seven points to consider, with supporting scripture verses.

1. Pray as Jesus taught in Matthew 6:13 “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one”. Apart from God, we have no hope of resisting temptation. Praying with others, or asking trusted friends and counselors for prayer, is also a great way to help you keep in the practice of prayer.

2. Know yourself well. Our old corrupt nature lingers within us as our enemy. Rom. 7:21-23 says “When I want to do good, evil is right there with me”. Ephesians. 4:22-23. says “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds”. It may seem odd, but we must make a study of ourselves. How can we be on guard for some sin in us unless we know what we are looking for?

3. Learn to recognize temptation. James 1:14 says, “Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire”. We can prevent it by filling ourselves with the things God tells us in his Word. 1st Timothy. 6:11 says “But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness”. We need to faithfully sit under the teaching of the Word by our spiritual leaders so we can get better and better at discerning when we are being tempted.

4. Take preventative action. If you know certain situations will bring you into temptation, take preventative action and avoid those things. Like Joseph who fled from Potiphar’s wife (Genesis 39) when she tried to seduce him, we must sometimes simply run away or avoid the things that tempt us. Keep on your minds verse 9 “How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God”?!

5. Quote scripture to yourself. The Word of God found in the Bible is also called the “sword of the Spirit” by Paul in Ephesians 6:17, and we can use it to battle those things that tempt us. “Get thee behind me satan”! - a quote we can use from Jesus while using scripture to fight temptation.

6. Get adequate rest. Matthew 26:41 says “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing but the body is weak”. We are more susceptible to temptation when we are exhausted. When we are tired we are weakened and so more vulnerable to the deceptions of the devil. Rest is very important for our spirituality, and we must be extra vigilant when are tired, asking the Lord for extra strength to resist temptation.

7. Remember there is always a way of escape. God never allows us to be tempted beyond what we can take but always provides us with a way out. James 4:7-8 says “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you”. He also gives us his church, a community of fellow fighters, to help us in our battles. We need to take full advantage of these resources God provide.

“God Will Take Care Of You”

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

A very simple bible passage, but often overlooked in application, as we struggle through life. Unchecked, this can lead to discouragement, depression, envy, anger, bitterness, and a host of other descriptives, assigned to our circumstances. In 1904, Walter and Civilla Martin penned the hymn that captures the essence of this bible passage, as Civilla suffered through an illness. When sung, we often do not focus on the words or actual meaning of the song and oftentimes only sing by rote. Here are the words for your comfort and meditation:

Be not dismayed whate’er betide, God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide, God will take care of you.
Refrain:
God will take care of you, Through every day, o’er all the way;
He will take care of you, God will take care of you.
Through days of toil when heart doth fail, God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail, God will take care of you.
All you may need He will provide, God will take care of you;
Nothing you ask will be denied, God will take care of you.
No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast, God will take care of you.

Do Not Be Deceived!

“Galatians 6: 7-8 - Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from

that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life”.

We may have heard these words many times, but do we really consider the severity of mocking God - destruction?! After all…..what is in a

“word”? In todays society, the name of God is mocked even among self acclaimed “Christians” and so called “Christian” churches. But the devil

would lie to us with “words” as he did with Eve when he said to her “Did God really say…”.

So what is in a word? Why are words important? Example given….just recently during a Resurrection Sunday service and drama presentation in

a self proclaimed “Christian” church, the leader prayed to “Mother God”. In the same church and presentation, they portrayed Jesus as being a

“woman” crucified on the cross. “The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction”. So you may ask, “Why is

this an issue with Christians”? The simple answer is found in a “Word”. Without the knowledge of the truth, we believe a lie.

Many people have a misunderstanding of words because they have not studied language linguistics, so in a sense, they are ignorant of the truth

or at least untrained; at worst, they believe the lies of the devil. Those who have studied God’s Word in context with the cultural issues at the time

when the Old Testament and New Testament were written, can gain greater insight into the truth of Gods Word and therefore cannot be led astray

by “the devil, the world, and our flesh”. We must rely on the original accurate translations in order to espouse truth and refute lies.

So why is it impossible, and even evil, to not use the proper noun or pronoun for references to God and Jesus? Look at what our society has done

with the use of “nouns and pronouns”. Perversion sets in! It is extremely important to note the correct and truthful use of God’s name and His

Word, which will then help us in navigating these societal issues. This carries over to the world’s misunderstanding of the terms “man” and

“woman”, which have been well defined over thousands of years. Of course, you have to believe the truth of the Bible in order to accept this truth.

Unfortunately, many do not and they will “reap destruction”.

Sunday Bible Study

Reasons to Believe continues until the week of November 12. Each week during our Adult Bible class, we will walk through the PowerPoint presentation to answer questions and discuss the meaning of each of the reasons we have for the hope within us (1 Peter 3:15).
Between now and November 12th, please share with me topics that are of interest to you. We could, for example, examine the prophecies in the Old Testament pertaining to the birth of Jesus. Or, we could gather Biblical answers to questions our family and friends ask about spirituality and Christianity. What about a discussion on suffering (a look into WHY there is suffering in the world?) We could, possibly search the Scriptures to answer the question: “What does God want me to do?” The possibilities are endless. What is your biggest question about God…salvation…The Church…lifestyle… end times…morality…etc.? Please email me your questions (or share those questions during our class).

I look forward to hearing from you!

Elders Insight : Christians and Outward Adornment

For a Christian, every issue comes down to one question…..What is it that pleases God and brings

glory to Him? Our life on earth is a preparation for living with God in eternity. How does outward

adornment play into this plan? There are several ways we can adorn ourselves. Outward adornment

could be jewelry, clothing, makeup, hair color, tattoos, skin piercings, etc. This article will address the

use of tattoos. How should a Christian approach the personal use of tattoos? Should these

principles apply to other areas of our life? Consider this: 1 Corinthians 6:19. Do you not know that

your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are

not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Memory Verse : 2 Samuel 7:22

The church confesses to Christ, “You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). The church is encouraged to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ...” (Col. 3:16). Psalm 1 teaches us to meditate on God’s Word day and night. It is our great opportunity and joy to read and study God’s Word. One beneficial practice is to memorize the Scriptures and, in so doing, to meditate on it.

Lutherans in Maui Assist with Fire Response

A street in Lāhainā on the island of Maui, Hawaii, reflects damage on Aug. 15 from the Maui wildfire. (U.S. Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Matthew A. Foster)

On Aug. 8, a wildfire near the village of Lāhainā on the island of Maui, Hawaii, rapidly spread out of control, part of a larger series of wildfires plaguing the island. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but like other recent fires on the island, it was fed by extremely dry conditions and high winds. A week later, the lives lost number more than a hundred, with hundreds more still unaccounted for.

On Aug. 15, the Rev. Michael Lange, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) California-Nevada-Hawaii (CNH) District, sent an email update to the CNH District with the question: “What message do we bring to those so much in need of care and love?”

Lange answered that they need to hear that they have a God “who is Emmanuel (God with us)! He is with you and for you! We are the body of Christ, walking, loving, living, and sharing with those in need.”

Lange reported that Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School in Kahului, Maui, was not directly impacted by the fire (one or two families from the school were minimally affected), but that Emmanuel members are serving “as God’s hands and feet to the people of Maui. They are Christ’s ambassadors and bear the presence of the Savior. Pray for their strength and care as they walk beside many in great need.”

Memory Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17

The church confesses to Christ, “You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). The church is encouraged to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ...” (Col. 3:16). Psalm 1 teaches us to meditate on God’s Word day and night. It is our great opportunity and joy to read and study God’s Word. One beneficial practice is to memorize the Scriptures and, in so doing, to meditate on it.

The LCMS invites everyone to memorize a verse together each week.

This week’s memory verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:16–17

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

FAQS : Where are you located?

We are at 1011 Ulatis Drive in Vacaville, CA. For those of you who are familiar to Vacaville, it’s rather simple. We are across the street from the Vacaville Cultural Center at the corner of Ulatis and Harbison Drives. For those not familiar with Vacaville, we are minutes off of I-80 taking either the Allison Drive (EB I-80) exit or Nut Tree Drive (WB I-80) exit to Allison.  [East bound travelers may turn right onto Allison Drive; whereas, west bound travelers will want to turn left onto Allison Drive, going over the freeway. Proceed to Ulatis to then turn left at the light. Continue past the school to the next light after Harbison Drive and make a u-turn to allow access to the front parking lot. (It’s actually much simpler than it reads.)

The Foundation of Bethany Lutheran School

Bethany Lutheran School (BLS) is committed to provide a 21st century education for our students and to share Jesus’ amazing love. Our students are learning, practicing, and applying the skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity in reading, science, math, history, writing, arts and biblical study while wrestling with worldview; these are all foundational to becoming a self-reflective member of society. In the interest of developing the whole child, all students also receive instruction in music and physical education.

The Bethany Lutheran Church congregation had a vision to build a Lutheran elementary school as an extension of its ministry to the Vacaville and surrounding communities.  The involvement and support of the church congregation continues, as it works with purpose to nurture in each person an active, personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  What began as a Preschool serving the community since 1974 has now extended into a full-service education through the eighth grade.

We have been blessed with a wonderful staff who continues to guide each child to receive the education needed to be successful in the future.  We look forward to meeting with you about how any of our ministries may be of service to your family!

What people are saying about Bethany Lutheran School

“Our son is showing significant improvements in all areas of life thanks to being back in school, and in a school that cares for their students. I am amazed with your program and, our son will continue going there as long as y'all will have him. I hope to never put him back in public school. Thank you all for everything you do!"

 – Will Spinetti, Parent

“Hope this reaches the donor who donated to Bethany Lutheran School. Because of your generous donation, my son is able to attend a private, faith-based school at half tuition. It was truly a gift. He had the best first day of school and, I hope to one day be able to pay it forward."

– Elizabeth Selby, Parent

“Bethany is more than ‘just a school’. It is an extension of family. I am able to serve my country knowing that my children and family are secure in the Bethany Family. I am able to focus on my duty to defend our country because my family has a strong network available to them if needed.”

– Chris Thrasher, Parent

Our Electives Grades 5 – 8

Life Skills – This course incorporates both academic skills and daily living skills that are necessary to participate as independently as possible in the community as Christian and a valued member of society. Learning to overcome obstacles, dealing with life in general are a few of the skills you will learn during the course of the semester in this informative, activities based, and life skills class. We will cover topics such as how to balance a checkbook, how to properly do laundry and ironing, how to get along better with family and friends, and so much more. This class will give you much needed information to help in life now and the future.

Robotics – This course introduces students to the working principles of robotics with applications for film production using robotics. Students will explore fun applications, such as robotic soccer and robotic drawing by controlling a single robot out of the box, and continue on to multiple robot applications aided by a graphical user interface and computer programming using the C/C++ interpreter Ch. Students write robotics programs to perform various tasks with applications for the RoboPlay competition. With robots, students explore their creativity in writing, art, music, choreography, design, video editing and film production. This course emphasizes hands-on robotics activities to explore applications of robotics to gain effective communication and team work skills.

Art Appreciation – This course is an exploration of visual art forms and their cultural connections for the student with little experience in the visual arts. It includes a brief study of art history, and in-depth studies of the elements, media, and methods used in creative thought and processes. Students will also have the opportunity to explore cultural art through virtual trips using Google Cardboard and other V-R devices.

Disciple Buddies – As an extension on the Christian doctrine, and chapel program, Disciple Buddies offers the middle school students an opportunity to grow their faith. Students will gather in faith groups on occasion with parents and teachers leading a discussion, bible exploration, or time of prayer.  We pray that the Holy Spirit works through our mentors as they live and speak authentically of their own spiritual walk.  Also, monthly throughout the school year, many of our middle school students will mentor a dedicated elementary school “buddy” from the primary school. Through our one-campus model, our older students will serve as mentors for our younger students.  Classes may pair up and have “book buddies” for the year.   Certain activities lend themselves to needing the help and guidance of older students providing a chance for unstructured mentoring relationships.  Our staff can identify these opportunities and facilitate the pairing of a student mentor with a student who could benefit.

Teacher’s Assistant (TA) – Allows students to assist a teacher with one or more classes. Some of the tasks include assisting students with their work, working one-on-one with younger students, making copies, and taking time to learn some of the nuances of what an educator does on a daily basis.

Cooking 101 – This course offers an introduction to the culinary arts. Students learn about basic cooking equipment and menu planning: including vegetable chopping and paring; how to make salad, vinaigrette, and other easy no-cook dishes; how to roast garlic and root vegetables; how to prepare delicious pasta; how to sauté and roast meats and more; and how to make desserts in minutes. Hungry yet

Digital Photography – Students will be introduced to the basic technology necessary for the production of their art work, as well as learning about the visual arts, how to look at and critique photography, photographic vocabulary, using tools such as framing, composition, “rule of thirds", light, texture, pattern, lines, symmetry, depth of field, distance, perspective, culture, space, balance, color and black and white photography, and be introduced to many works by well-known photographers.

Forensics – Introduction to the application of scientific methods for the examination of physical evidence in the criminal justice system; an overview of the forensic analysis of firearms, fingerprints, drugs, blood, hair, fibers, paint, glass, arson debris, etc.

Agriculture – This course has been designed to create an awareness, provide introductory experiences, and develop an understanding of all areas of Agricultural Sciences. This course allows students to develop knowledge and skills regarding career opportunities, personal development, globalization, industry standards, details, practices, and expectations. To prepare for success, students need to have opportunities to learn, reinforce, experience, apply, and transfer their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings.

Honors Technology / Multimedia Design – This will be the first course offered as an Honors leveled course at Bethany Lutheran. Students who desire to be in this course must apply in the fall for Spring consideration. This course is designed as a semester-long, hands-on, project-oriented class which introduces STEM principles, concepts and guidelines so that the students engage in current topics related to industry standards and practices. The Honors Technology course will be open to students who have successfully completed or demonstrated a high level of knowledge of basic and elementary computing practices such as keyboarding, basic coding, and web design. Students will have also maintained above average grades in their previous technology courses. The course is designed to teach students the advanced features within the Microsoft Office Suite, Web Design, coding, and an introduction to Visual Basic. Students will also hone their skills by developing high end digital media driven projects which consist of photography, video, and audio. In addition to the academic rigor of the course, students will participate in a major collaborative final project with other students and teachers from varying departments such as Science and/or English. Each student will also participate in a trimester collaborative STEM project with their Science and Math classes.

Diversity in Electives

One of the most important components of an educational program, is the ability to offer diversity within the course matrix. While striving to provide a high quality academic program, we realize that electives are essential in building that diversity. Bethany Lutheran is proud to offer our students a very rich and diverse elective program. Electives are typically courses that fall outside of the main core academic subject areas (English, math, history, science and foreign language). Electives may reflect a teen’s interests, introduce or improve skills, or be directly related to a future career. Electives do not require as much time or work as a core course, but include educational content.

Our elective courses are comprised of 6 to 8-week modules, which allows the student to experience a variety of new and challenging courses while learning new skills. The courses will be provided to students in grades 5 – 8. Although each student will have an opportunity to take an elective course, they may not be able to participate in each one that is offered due to their own individual academic course offering.

Pre-School, OUR PHILOSOPHY

WE BELIEVE…that our program should meet the needs of the whole child (spiritual, physical, emotional, social, creative and cognitive) in a safe, nurturing positive environment.

…that a child learns best by having opportunities to explore, create, and discover; so we maintain a child-oriented classroom, keeping an appropriate balance between child-initiated and teacher-directed activities.

…and that the learning environment should foster a positive self-concept in each child, and that our staff should be sensitive to the individual differences and developmental stages of each child.
