3 Christmas Cookies KIDS Can MAKE!

You've got a lot on your plate this holiday season; why not put the kids in charge of baking some Christmas Cookies. Here are 3 easy recipes that your little ones can make themselves!

OREO ORNAMENTS

Ingredients
- oreos
- 1 cup white chocolate chips
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- Rolos
- Decorations

Directions.
1. Melt chocolate and coconut oil in microwave (for about 1.5 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds).
2. Dip oreos in chocolate and decorate!

HOT COCOA COOKIES

Ingredients
- 1 package refrigerated sugar cookie dough
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 12-18 marshmallows, cut in half- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips- 2 tsp coconut oil- sprinkles or other edible decorations

Directions
1. Mix cookie dough with flour and cocoa. You can do by hand or with a mixer.
2. Take about a teaspoon of dough, roll into a ball and flatten slightly. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet.
3. Bake at 350 for about 6-8 minutes.
4. Place 1/2 marshmallow on top of each cookie and put back into oven for 2-3 minutes until the marshmallows are golden brown.
5. Melt chocolate chips and coconut oil into microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring after each interval. Continue until melted (usually about 1.5 minutes)
6. Drizzle chocolate over cookie and decorate. Enjoy!

PEPPERMINT OREOS

Ingredients for Cookie
- 1 cup sugar
- 9 tbsp butter, softened- 1 egg
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 2/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder- pinch salt

Ingredients for Filling
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2- 1 tsp peppermint extract
- crushed candy canes

Directions
1. Cream butter and sugar.
2. Add egg and cream. Then add flour and cocoa powder and mix, slowly at first.
3. Add baking powder, baking soda and salt and mix.
4. Roll dough by teaspoon full into a ball, roll in sugar, and flatten onto parchment-lined baking sheet.
5. Bake at 375 for 6-8 minutes.
6. While your cookies bake, make your filling. Cream butter and then add your powdered sugar, a little at a time.
7. Add peppermint extract and candy canes.
8. Once cookies are cool, add filling and some extra candy canes. Munch away!

EAT | 5 Homework Snacks Kids Can Make!!

Your kids can only eat so many pretzels. :). Here are 5 snacks, easy enough for kids to make, that will give them energy to finish their homework and won't leave them bouncing off the wall once it's done.

Brown Paper Popcorn
Microwave 1/3 cup popcorn in a brown paper bag (folding down the corners of the bag so it doesn't open) for about 2.5 minutes. When popping slows down, remove. Be sure to monitor so nothing burns.

Semi-Homemade Pop Tarts
Unroll a can of crescent rolls, keeping them as rectangles. Pinch the seems closed. Spoon about 1 tablespoon jam in the center of rectangle, leaving about 1/4 inch empty along the edges. Place another rectangle on top and crimp edges with a fork. Bake at 425 for about 8-10 minutes.

Fruit Dip
Mix ¼ cup greek yogurt, ¼ cup almond butter, 1 tbsp honey, ¼ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp vanilla in a small bowl. Dip strawberries and apples!

Mug Cake
Mix 1 tbsp cocoa powder, 3 tbsp flour, 1/8 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1 tbsp sugar, 3 tsp coconut or vegetable oil, 3 tbsp milk, 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract and 1 tbsp kid-friendly protein powder in a bowl. Pour into a mug and microwave for 1-1.5 minutes.

If your child has some in-person learning this year, they will have to wear a mask. But keeping a mask on a child’s face is easier said than done - even the CDC acknowledges that it will be challenging for younger students. So how to keep your kid from taking off their mask? Experts advise to explain to children why it’s so important to wear masks, and to set an example by wearing masks themselves. Letting kids decorate their own masks can also make the experience more fun.

INSTRUCTIONS

Shoe tying box
Draw shoe shape on cardboard box.
Cut out holes where shoelaces go through.
Tie two different color pieces of yarn together and lace up the board.
Draw instructions at the top.

Lion flossing practice
Cut out lion shapes from construction paper.
Glue pieces of paper together to from the lion and hot glue marshmallows into the mouth.
Place tissue paper between the marshmallows.
Practice flossing with string between the marshmallows.

Time Telling Helper
Write out the hours on a clock on the paper plate. Cut a slit in between the numbers.
Cut out the hour and minute arrows of a clock from construction paper. With one arrow being shorter than another.
Place the plate with numbers on a new paper plate. Place the paper arrows on top in the center.
Poke a hole through the center of it all.
Insert a pipe cleaner through the hole and coil it up.
Lift each flap on the top paper plate and write the minutes underneath.
Write “Hours” and “Minutes” on each corresponding arrow.

Chore list
Write out the daily and weekly sections with a to do side and a done side.
Write out each chore on a clothespin and clip it on the to do side.
When a chore is completed, clip it to the other side.

Spelling activity kit
Paint popsicle sticks to desired colors and let it dry completely.
Write words onto stick.
Put sticks in a plastic bag to keep it separated from the alphabets.
Let kids play and spell anywhere and on the go!

Bethany Lutheran School Enrichment & Remediation Program

Bethany Lutheran School is proud to offer our new summer enrichment and remediation summer program. This program will act as an extension of the school, and provide students entering grades 1st through 8th grade an opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding in various subjects or improve upon an earned 4th quarter grade of C or lower. Classes will be held daily from 8:30am—12:20pm, and students will also have an opportunity to transition into our summer day camp after they eat lunch. There is a separate charge for our Summer Day Camp Program. (Students must bring their own lunch daily.)

What are Enrichment Courses?

Enrichment courses extend beyond the subjects that are typically taught in schools and may include learning various subjects. These courses are meant to challenge students, while allowing them to explore new or existing subjects. The success of the Enrichment Program depends on the enrollment of students.

What is a Remediation Program?

The remediation program is designed to close the gap between what a student knows and what he’s expected to know, while helping to improve upon an earned grade of C or below

Be Strong in the Lord

Join us for amazing fun this summer at Bethany Lutheran School! Our Summer Day Camp provides children a safe, stimulating environment where they will make new friends and explore their creativity. This program is led by experienced teachers and features low student to teacher ratios based on grade level (K-4 and 5-8). Day camp is open to students’ grades K – 8th, and open to all students from the community.

Create your child’s perfect summer with weekly or full summer options! Our summer day camp has been designed to provide you with flexible and customizable offerings. Days start as early as 6:30am and last as late as 6pm! Our 9-week session begins June 8th and ends on August 7th. Families also have the option of attending on a weekly basis. We do not offer pro-rated prices for partial weeks. Summer camp will have a field trip once a week on Wednesdays and each Friday we will be going swimming to the Walter Graham Aquatic Center, Vacaville (based on locations/pool hours of operation.) Field Trips are subject to cancellation due to lack of participation and travel will be provided by Vacaville Public City Coach and/or parent volunteers.

Activities vary from week to week and are designed to be age appropriate. All students will complete online enrichment activities in the morning with fun and crafts after. Activities available every session are: Arts & Crafts, Khan Academy Level Up in Math, English and Reading enrichment activities, Wednesday/Friday Field Trips off campus, Creative Writing Workshop, STEM courses, weekly themes, and much more!

Dear Bethany Families,

Bethany Administration has been closely monitoring the ever-changing situation with respect to the COVID-19 virus and its effect on our community. In light of the recent events surrounding COVID-19, we are taking steps to protect the health and well-being of our students, families, current and future Eagles. After careful deliberation and the small attendance today at school, we have made the difficult decision to close Bethany Lutheran School from Tuesday, March 17th through April 3rd. School will resume on Monday, April 6th. Although the Solano County Health Department and the CDC have affirmed that school can be open and run as normal, many parents have expressed concern and uneasiness about sending their son or daughter to school. While I still trust God and believe He has us covered, we want to make sure we are part of the growing steps to curtail this pandemic and that means minimizing the risk to our staff and students.

What this means for the students:
Teachers are creating weekly work packets for students each week. These packets can be picked up at school or accessed online via email or TAD’s. All students are expected to complete work sent home, as we will be using these methods to ensure our students are staying current with their educational academic pathway. I encourage parents to stop by the school as soon as possible to pick up any books the students may need or want to use during the course of the next two weeks. Middle school students who do not have access to a computer may check out a Chromebook for the home during this time, however, due to the limited quantity, these will be loaned on a first come first serve basis.

What this means for teachers:
Teachers will be required to come to work, part of the day at school and work from home remotely. While many Bethany employees will be on campus during the workday, they will not be accessible to the general public. All inquiries and questions for staff need to be sent via email. Some departments, such as bookkeeping, and janitorial will continue to operate during the school closures in order to make sure the school grounds are maintained, employees are paid and buildings remain in good repair. Other staff members will be working from their offices or at home to plan how to decrease interruptions to learning if these closures are to continue. While this situation continues to evolve, our goal has been and will continue to be to coordinate closely with the Solano County Department of Public Health. I want to thank again our BLS teachers and staff for their tremendous work and continued professionalism as we work through a challenging time. I also thank our greater community for your patience and sensitivity to the evolving nature of this outbreak and the greater goal of doing our part to protect our most vulnerable communities.
In the meantime, BLS will continue to stay in close conversation with the city, state, and local officials and partners as our entire region respond to new guidance and a call to take an active role in combating COVID-19. Thank you for your partnership and understanding.
