Sunday Service 3-22- 20

"A Portion To Live On" - I cry to you, LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living".

Sunday, March 22, 2020

Dear Bethany Families,

Bethany Administration has been closely monitoring the ever-changing situation with respect to the COVID-19 virus and its effect on our community. In light of the recent events surrounding COVID-19, we are taking steps to protect the health and well-being of our students, families, current and future Eagles. After careful deliberation and the small attendance today at school, we have made the difficult decision to close Bethany Lutheran School from Tuesday, March 17th through April 3rd. School will resume on Monday, April 6th. Although the Solano County Health Department and the CDC have affirmed that school can be open and run as normal, many parents have expressed concern and uneasiness about sending their son or daughter to school. While I still trust God and believe He has us covered, we want to make sure we are part of the growing steps to curtail this pandemic and that means minimizing the risk to our staff and students.

What this means for the students:
Teachers are creating weekly work packets for students each week. These packets can be picked up at school or accessed online via email or TAD’s. All students are expected to complete work sent home, as we will be using these methods to ensure our students are staying current with their educational academic pathway. I encourage parents to stop by the school as soon as possible to pick up any books the students may need or want to use during the course of the next two weeks. Middle school students who do not have access to a computer may check out a Chromebook for the home during this time, however, due to the limited quantity, these will be loaned on a first come first serve basis.

What this means for teachers:
Teachers will be required to come to work, part of the day at school and work from home remotely. While many Bethany employees will be on campus during the workday, they will not be accessible to the general public. All inquiries and questions for staff need to be sent via email. Some departments, such as bookkeeping, and janitorial will continue to operate during the school closures in order to make sure the school grounds are maintained, employees are paid and buildings remain in good repair. Other staff members will be working from their offices or at home to plan how to decrease interruptions to learning if these closures are to continue. While this situation continues to evolve, our goal has been and will continue to be to coordinate closely with the Solano County Department of Public Health. I want to thank again our BLS teachers and staff for their tremendous work and continued professionalism as we work through a challenging time. I also thank our greater community for your patience and sensitivity to the evolving nature of this outbreak and the greater goal of doing our part to protect our most vulnerable communities.
In the meantime, BLS will continue to stay in close conversation with the city, state, and local officials and partners as our entire region respond to new guidance and a call to take an active role in combating COVID-19. Thank you for your partnership and understanding.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Help Comes Beyond the Hills. Rescue. We’ve seen it happen in old time Westerns. Even in ancient times people waited for someone to come from the hills to bring rescue. We look up in our lives seeking rescue from tough economic times, worry over health issues and disability, we long for relief. The psalmist shares the One who brings lasting rescue.

Announcement: Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Dear Bethany Lutheran Families,

In response to the growing number of inquiries we’ve received regarding the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), I thought that it was appropriate to stay ahead of this situation and share our genuine concern regarding this growing health crisis. We believe the best way to provide a response to any concerns you may have as a parent is through education. Understanding what the CDC, the WHO (World Health Organization), and other health institutions are dealing with, we must share some insight into this virus. Below is a brief overview of what the community needs to know about COVID -19 as prepared for by Kaiser Permanente Hospitals.

What is coronavirus?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID -19) is a type of virus that causes respiratory
illness — an infection of the airways and lungs.

What are the symptoms?

Patients with COVID -19 have had mild to severe respiratory illness with
symptoms of fever, cough, or shortness of breath — similar to the flu.

How does it spread?

The virus is thought to spread person to person — mainly between people who are
in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through tiny droplets made when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It also may be possible that a person can get COVID -19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

How can I protect myself and my loved ones?

Some people are more vulnerable to the virus, including older adults and people with chronic conditions. But everyone should take steps to protect themselves. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water regularly for at least 20 seconds.
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
  • Try not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you’re sick (except to get medical care). Keep sick children home from school.

  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow. Wash your hands afterward.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

What should I do if I think I have symptoms?

If you develop symptoms (fever, cough, trouble breathing) or you believe you’ve been exposed, it’s important to call Kaiser first so we can direct you to the most appropriate care. Call the advice number on your Kaiser Permanente membership card to speak with a licensed care provider or to schedule a telephone or video appointment with your doctor.

What is Bethany Lutheran doing in response?

First and foremost, we trust firmly in our Lord; however, it is important that as a church and school we are prepared. Therefore, in partnership with the CNH District, we are preparing and not panicking.

  • Teachers and staff are really taking more time to clean and sanitize their rooms, equipment, and contact points.
  •  Our bathrooms are being deep cleaned and sanitized from top to bottom by Cintas twice a month
  • Students are being allowed and instructed to wash their hands frequently throughout the day.
  •  The janitorial staff is utilizing a disinfect which quickly and effectively combats germs. This is an EPA-registered and CDC-approved disinfectant for combatting the Coronavirus. Products with EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens are expected to be effective against COVID-19 based on data for harder to kill viruses. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products (e.g., concentration, application method and contact time, etc.).
  •  Everyone is wearing disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surfaces throughout the day.

Bethany Lutheran will continue to partner with the Vacaville Unified School District in their response to this virus. Meaning should VUSD have cause at some point to close their schools, BLS will consider the same options. Vacaville area schools are communicating with Solano Public Health (SPH) to stay completely informed of all matters pertaining to COVID-19. All BLS families will be updated via email, text, and hard copy should any major developments occur. Together through prayer and steadfast trust in our Lord and Savior, this crisis will be averted.

KIDS TAKE-OVER and Make Their OWN Lunch AGAIN!

This week all of the kids wanted to come up with their own lunch, AND build it! The kids get to use new sandwich cutters for their school lunch ideas this week, and as you will see, giving them more control over the foods made them actually finish the entire lunch! To build Friday's lunch we head to Target for a fun lunch twist on a YouTube Challenge. The kids can only pick a lunch item from their age aisle! Will the lunch be any good?
